BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Bexar County Precinct 3 deputy constables shot and killed two dogs during an eviction call at an apartment complex on the North Side, county officials said.
Deputy constables were serving a writ of possession in the 1200 block of Patricia Drive at the Tuscany Park apartments on Monday morning, the final step in the eviction process, according to the Precinct 3 Constable’s Office.
The man the deputy constables were serving barricaded himself in his apartment when they arrived, officials said.
When backup arrived, the deputy constables worked to make entry to the apartment with a battering ram. The Precinct 3 Constable’s Office said the man then let go of two pit bulls and escaped down the second-floor balcony.
Both dogs charged at the deputy constables, and they attempted to stun them with a Taser. The dogs were subdued for a few seconds, but they were able to break free.
One dog let go of the constable deputy and tried to attack the officer with the battering ram. The Precinct 3 Constable’s Office said they had to use deadly force.
One dog was shot in the neck and the other behind the head. Both were killed, the Precinct 3 Constable’s Office said.
Deputy constables told KSAT it could take up to 48 hours for county employees to remove the animals.
The man who escaped has not been found at this time. He could face an obstruction or hindering charge, according to the constable’s office.
Clarification: An earlier version of this story stated that Animal Care Services would remove the animals, based on information gathered at the scene. However, a spokesperson for Animal Care Services said the agency is not involved in this case.
