“It’s with great sadness we announce our FINAL DAY OF SERVICE as La Ruina, this Saturday, September 28th,” the business wrote in its Instagram post.
The team behind The Modernist opened La Ruina two years ago at 410 Austin St. La Ruina was known for its cocktails featuring tequila, rum, wine and mezcal.
KSAT 12 reached out to The Modernist for a comment about the building’s future. Luiz Munoz, owner of the East Grayson cocktail bar, said they are transforming the space into a “neighborhood icehouse,” called Louie’s Icehouse.
Munoz said customers can expect Louie’s to be a more beer-heavy and tequila-based joint that offers patio games, TVs for sporting events, and darts inside. Price-wise, he said there will be several drink specials and happy hours, adding that he’d be bringing a Modernist bartender to create a “neighborhood cocktail.”
Shifting to food, Louie’s is planning to keep Kai’s Caribbean Fusion, a Caribbean-based, mom-and-pop food truck that was “super popular and loved by people,” Munoz said. He added they will incorporate some other food options, too.
KSAT asked if the soon-to-be-closed La Ruina would look different inside.
Munoz said yes and told us that the back patio would be rebuilt. He expects to see a Spurs-themed mural created by San Antonio street artist Colten Valentine at the future bar. He added that the upstairs of La Ruina will be available to rent out for events.
The icehouse will be open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with its grand opening on Oct. 18.
