SAN ANTONIO – Fiesta may be more than two weeks away, but preparations are already in the works for the Battle of Flowers Parade.
On Tuesday, students from 10 San Antonio-area high schools got their first look at the parade floats they will be riding in during a rehearsal session.
“I just feel grateful to be in this spot and to be able to be on the float. And I just think it’s something that is extremely special, and I feel blessed to be here,” said Miguel Romero, a Churchill High School senior.
Catherine Bishop of the Battle of Flowers Association said the group wants all local students to have an opportunity to participate.
“Every four years, they rotate in so that hopefully all their bands, all their cheerleaders, all their spirit groups, and student council can participate at least for one year while they’re in high school,” Bishop said.
The float theme for the Public School Section this year is “Celebrations We Love In San Antonio.” Each float will provide parade goers with a dazzling glimpse of the traditions and celebrations that are the soul of San Antonio, like the Martin Luther King Jr. March, Brackenridge Park camping, quinceañeras and military heritage.
“I was absolutely amazed, they did a wonderful job with (decorating the floats), and it looks amazing,” said Noah Guajardo, a Churchill High School junior.
For many of the students participating, this is an opportunity to be a part of a parade they grew up watching.
“It’s our holiday. We really made it our own, and we celebrate it in a big way, and I think that’s awesome,” Guajardo said.
“What should people expect come Battle of Flowers?” asked KSAT reporter John Paul Barajas.
“They should expect a show from us,” Romero answered
The high schools that will be participating in the parade, which will be held on April 26 are: Churchill, Cole, Harlan, Highlands, Jefferson, Judson, Marshal, McCollum, O’Connor and Southwest.
