Man accused in 2021 fatal shooting goes on trial

Tavares Anderson charged in shooting death of Malcolm Everett

SAN ANTONIO – A murder trial got underway Tuesday for a man accused of fatally shooting another man at an apartment complex in the Medical Center in 2021.

Tavares Anderson is charged with murder for the death of Malcolm Everett.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Addison Apartments in the 2500 block of Babcock Road.

Police said Anderson, two women and Everett were drinking before an argument broke out.

Moments later, the situation escalated, resulting in Anderson pulling a handgun and fatally shooting Everett in the chest, according to police.

During opening statements Tuesday, Anderson’s attorney contended that the defendant acted in self-defense.

But prosecutors told the jury the evidence will show otherwise.

“The defendant told them he shot Ray, the gun was recovered, the ballistics match, there are people who watched it happen,” Assistant District Attorney Jennifer McDaniel said.

The trial is expected to last through the end of the week.
