San Antonio Public Library to hold Halloween events through Oct. 31

Crafts, contests, movies offered for families looking for things to do

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Public Library wants to help you and your family get into the spooky spirit with Halloween parties and events.

On Tuesday, the San Pedro branch library, located at 1315 San Pedro Avenue, is hosting a “Monsters and Makeup” event.

Families can learn how to use makeup and prosthetics for special effects, which is perfect for those wanting to dress up and wear monster-like makeup for Halloween this year.

Landa Branch Manager Kiyanna Stephens says the public library is a space where everyone is welcome.

“The library is a space for everyone, and everyone is welcome here. We try really hard to make sure there are things going on for all ages,” she said.

Events will be hosted by the public library until Oct. 31. For a list of those events, read below:

Monsters and Makeup with Miguel

Tuesday, October 24 | 4 – 7 p.m. San Pedro Branch Library, 1315 San Pedro Ave., 78212

Professional makeup and special effects artist Miguel Cantu will join us at San Pedro Library for a full makeup and prosthetics demonstration. An entrepreneur and owner of his own business called Altered Vision Studios, Miguel has worked in the film and television industry for two decades, making monsters, makeup, and magic effects for many films and television episodes.

Dia de los Muertos Craft - Ofrenda Picture Frame

Tuesday, October 24, 2023, 6 – 7 p.m.

Thousand Oaks Branch Library, 4618 Thousand Oaks, 78233

It’s an afternoon of crafting at Thousand Oaks. Make a paper photo frame for your Day of the Dead ofrenda. Supplies will be provided. We recommend bringing the photo you will be framing to get the right dimensions for the frame.

Halloween Bash

Saturday, October 28 | 12 – 2 p.m. Collins Garden Branch Library, 200 N. Park, 78204

Go for slime-making, fall crafts, and a pumpkin decorating contest. Winners will be announced at the event. The program is open to all ages.

Halloween Yoga Family Story Time

Saturday, October 28 | 4 – 5 p.m.

San Pedro Branch Library, 1315 San Pedro Ave., 78212

Bring the family for silly fun as we stretch ourselves into pumpkins, scary houses, witches and ghosts, and make a decorative craft. No yoga experience is required. This will be outside, so bring a mat or towel.

Scary Texas Stories

Monday, October 30 | 5 – 6 p.m. Central Library, 600 Soledad, 78205

Looking for a fright? Join Texana for a family-friendly reading of Texas ghost stories, myths, and legends. Snacks will be provided. Bring your costume, but leave your chainsaw (and other weapons) at home. No lewd, obscene, or offensive costumes.

Classic Movie Monday: Halloween Edition

Monday, October 30 | 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

On the last Monday of the month you can watch theclassic scary movie “Jaws”, directed by Steven Spielberg. This movie is rated PG.

Let’s Build: Halloween LEGOs and More!

Tuesday, October 31 | 4 – 6 p.m. San Pedro Library, 1315 San Pedro Ave., 78212

Come build all things Halloween-scary, funny, creepy, or just orange. You can come in costume, and have a little trick-or-treating too. Recommended for children 6-12 since some pieces are very small. We will have the larger DUPLOs on hand for younger children. Put your masterpiece on display in the library.

Halloween Story Time

Come in costume and join for a spooktacular story time and craft. For ages ten and under.
