UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas – Three robots are rolling through Universal City’s sidewalks this week, scanning for potential problems that could affect people with disabilities as part of the city’s ADA compliance efforts.
The robots, known as Daxbots, use sensors to track sidewalk width, slope, cracks and other hazards. Universal City set aside $94,000 from its 2026 fiscal budget to fund the project.
Three robots, named Chester, Smokey and Flynn, are in the city for one week, working during the daytime.
For the safety of the robots and their handlers, the city is not releasing their locations to the public. Still, residents who have spotted them have taken notice.
“I was shocked. I was like, ‘What is that thing?’” one resident said.
“I was like, ‘what in the world was that?’” said another.
A third resident said: “Man, we were wondering how he was going to get across the road right here, but he made it, he made it.”
