SAN ANTONIO – Two children were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash after one of the drivers suffered a medical episode and lost control of a vehicle, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
The crash happened just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 281 near Bitters Road.
A Toyota Highlander was traveling northbound on the access road of the highway when the driver suffered a medical episode, losing control of the vehicle, SAPD said in a preliminary report.
The Toyota struck a sign and crossed onto the northbound lanes of the highway, where police said it struck a Dodge Ram. The Dodge Ram then crashed into a Chevrolet Suburban.
The Dodge Ram lost control and rolled several times, police said.
Officers at the scene told KSAT two children were ejected from the Dodge Ram. That detail was not included in the preliminary report.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 40-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two passengers — a 15-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl — suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the report. All three were taken to a local hospital.
At the scene, officers told KSAT the 11-year-old’s condition had improved to non-life-threatening, though the preliminary report still lists her injuries as life-threatening.
Police said the 15-year-old suffered a broken ankle.
The driver of the vehicle that initiated the crash remained on scene and was cooperating with investigators, SAPD said.
Northbound U.S. Highway 281 was closed following the crash and reopened to all lanes of traffic around 6 p.m. Saturday.
The investigation is ongoing.
