SAN ANTONIO – Construction is set to begin on San Antonio’s second diverging diamond interchange, according to the Texas Department of Transportation, planned for the Southeast Side.
The $40 million infrastructure project aims to reduce congestion on Interstate 37 near Southeast Military Drive and make the corridor safer. It is expected to be complete in 2029.

A diverging diamond interchange shifts traffic to the opposite side of a roadway while moving through an intersection, so that left turns can be made without waiting for oncoming traffic to stop.
Traffic experts say the design significantly reduces the number of possible points where a crash can occur, while moving higher volumes of traffic more efficiently.

State traffic models project a 90% reduction in travel times for those exiting southbound I-37 onto Southeast Military Street.
While construction will require temporary lane closures, state transportation officials said most closures will occur overnight between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays to minimize disruptions. TxDOT said daytime and weekend work may also occur to keep the project on schedule.
