BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Gov. Greg Abbott formally requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration for Bexar County and other communities hit hard by severe storms in August.
Powerful thunderstorms swept across the San Antonio area Aug. 28, producing wind gusts approaching 80 mph and leaving a widespread trail of damage across Bexar County.

At the height of the storm, nearly 100,000 CPS Energy customers lost electricity as strong winds and lightning damaged equipment. Flash flooding was also a major issue.
If approved, the disaster declaration would make federal assistance available through disaster loans.
“This request to the SBA will deliver critical resources to Texans whose homes and businesses took damage in the August storms,” Abbott said in a news release Wednesday. “With our federal partners, Texas will give qualified families and businesses the tools they need to rebuild. Texas will deliver every necessary resource to Bexar County.”
The SBA assistance would cover damage caused by severe weather, including tornadic activity, thunderstorms, hail and straight-line winds.
Texans who experienced damage from the storms are encouraged to report it online.
