BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A suspect is in custody after he opened fire on his neighbor’s vehicle with “very little warning,” critically injuring two brothers, including a child, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
Deputies responded to the shooting around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 9800 block of Acadian Drive, which is located near Kriewald Road.
During a news conference, Salazar said an 11-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were backing the family car into their driveway when the suspect crossed the street from his home and shot at the vehicle multiple times.
Salazar said there was no provocation before the shooting.
“These two young men were just minding their own business in their family driveway, in their family car,” Salazar said. “For whatever reason, this guy comes across the street and starts shooting at them.”
Both victims were struck multiple times in the upper body and taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, identified as a 38-year-old man, fled the scene after the shooting. The man was later found a few blocks away and taken into custody.
Salazar said the weapon was recovered at a separate location.
The sheriff said dispatch received a call during the search from someone alleging to be the shooter. However, Salazar said it remains unclear if it was the man making the call.
BCSO said it has not been able to find a record of the suspect having any criminal or possible mental health history. However, the sheriff said family members report “there’s some sort of a history.”
“I don’t know if this is a straight-up mental health crisis or something drug-induced, or, you know, was he supposed to be on some kind of meds and didn’t,” Salazar said.
The man faces at least two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Salazar said.
Salazar asked residents in the area to review home surveillance footage between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. Anyone with any information is asked to call BCSO at 210-335-6000.
