SAN ANTONIO – A man traveling at a high rate of speed Wednesday morning was “distracted” before he was killed in a crash with an 18-wheeler, according to San Antonio police.
Officers responded to the crash at approximately 6:15 a.m. on the Interstate 35 southbound main lanes near O’Connor Road.
In a preliminary report, SAPD said the driver of a silver SUV was “distracted” when he rear-ended an 18-wheeler that was stopping due to heavy traffic.
Officers believe the SUV driver did not make an attempt to brake before the collision.
San Antonio fire officials later pronounced the SUV driver, a 27-year-old man, dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the 18-wheeler, a 32-year-old man, was not injured in the crash.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the collision prompted the closure of all I-35 southbound main lanes.
The lanes are expected to be closed for at least the next hour.
