Harlandale student apprehended off campus after report of handgun on campus, district says

Students and staff are safe, Harlandale ISD says

SAN ANTONIO – A Harlandale High School student was taken into custody off campus after the school was placed on lockdown Friday afternoon, according to the district.

The Harlandale Independent School District said law enforcement responded to a 911 report of a student in possession of a handgun.

Harlandale High School was placed on lockdown “as a precaution” while the San Antonio Police Department and Harlandale ISD police investigated, the district said. The lockdown was lifted once officers confirmed the suspect was not on campus.

“The student believed to be involved has been identified and apprehended off campus,” the district said in a statement.

A Saturday SAPD preliminary report states that students were released to their guardians after the location was cleared and safety ensured.

SAPD said the suspect, an 18-year-old man, was located nearby and taken into custody without incident. The report does not confirm whether the student was in possession of a handgun when taken into custody.

Harlandale ISD also did not describe the student’s involvement, nor have they confirmed whether the student was in possession of a handgun at the time they were taken into custody.

Students and staff are safe, according to the district, which said dismissal proceeded in “a controlled manner.”

The San Antonio Police Department previously rejected KSAT 12’s request for comment, directing back to Harlandale ISD.

The investigation is ongoing.
