Bexar County Medical Examiner identifies man shot and killed while walking on West Side

The suspects have not been located as of Saturday morning

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE on 02/08/2025: The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a man who was shot and killed while walking on the West Side.

Stephen Wayne Lutz, 42, was shot multiple times around 9 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Poplar Street and North Hamilton Avenue.

Lutz was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead, according to San Antonio police.

The ME’s office has not yet determined Lutz’s cause and manner of death.

Two suspects in the shooting fled the scene on foot and have not been located as of Saturday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY: A man is dead after he was shot multiple times while walking on the West Side, according to San Antonio police.

SAPD responded to the shooting just after 9 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Poplar Street and North Hamilton Avenue.

The victim, a 42-year-old man, was walking in a parking lot when two suspects approached him, one on foot and the other on a bike. The suspect on the bike passed the man, while the second suspect fired at the man multiple times, according to a preliminary report from SAPD.

After the shooting, the man fell, and the suspect on the bike came and potentially shot the man again, police said.

Both suspects fled on foot. SAPD deployed its EAGLE helicopter, but the pair has not been located, according to the report.

The victim was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead, police said.

As of Friday morning, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified the man.

During SAPD’s investigation on Thursday night, KSAT witnessed multiple shell casings on the ground at the scene.

In their report, police officers did not indicate how many times the man was shot.
