Unwanted toppings found on food at San Antonio restaurant; employees refuse to answer questions

Behind the Kitchen Door is a series where KSAT investigates local restaurants’ health inspections

SAN ANTONIO – Uninvited guests appeared in the kitchen and on customers’ plates in January, according to the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District.

Behind the Kitchen Door is a series where KSAT investigates health inspections of local restaurants. Here is a roundup for this edition:

Karolina’s Hacienda

During a Jan. 8 inspection, Metro Health gave Karolina’s Hacienda, a Mexican restaurant, an 83, but its seven violations found could leave a bad taste.

The restaurant is located at 11510 U.S. Hwy. 281 South. A banner above the entrance said it is under new management.

Several cold foods were found to be too warm.

The restaurant had to throw out several pounds and gallons of food.

Inspectors also saw food with pests in it.

KSAT asked the restaurant about these issues. An employee claimed the problems had been fixed.

“You can read it right here,” the employee said while handing over another report from Metro Health.

The employee refused to answer KSAT’s questions.

“No because I don’t have to,” said the employee. “That’s what [the inspector] told me.”

In a statement, Metro Health Deputy Director Dr. Anita Kurian said inspectors do not discourage businesses from engaging with media outlets.

“Any statements made by a restaurant regarding communication with the press are not reflective of Metro Health,” Kurian said.

While asked if new management was a result of the report, another employee stepped in.

Little Woodrow’s Braun

Metro Health ordered a reinspection at Little Woodrow’s Braun, a bar located at 9840 West Loop 1604 North, after the business earned an 84 on Jan. 10.

An inspector noted 10 violations, including multiple live roaches behind the cook line and throughout parts of the kitchen.

The employees were also reprimanded for not wearing hairnets.

Bertha’s Mexican Restaurant

During a Jan. 6 inspection, Bertha’s Mexican Restaurant — located at 2629 West Martin Street — earned an 85.

The inspector wrote that they found pest droppings in the storage area.

Beans, potatoes and raw meat were not properly covered in the cooler, according to the report.

Employees were also caught serving and prepping ready-to-eat foods without gloves.
