SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar joined KSAT 12 News anchors Steve Spriester and Myra Arthur from Washington D.C. for a KSAT Q&A during Wednesday night’s 6 O’Clock News.
Arthur asked Salazar if any ICE raids have happened in Bexar County since President Trump took office.
“If they have, they have not happened with the assistance of the (Bexar County) Sheriff’s Office,” Salazar said. “They haven’t asked us to engage in anything. I’ve been following that while I’ve been here in (Washington) D.C. It really hasn’t been (sic) any involvement from us, to speak of.”
Salazar outlined a scenario where the sheriff’s office would assist federal agents.
“If they asked, if they have a criminal warrant in hand, then I believe we’re duty-bound to help at that point,” Salazar said. “But if it’s just a fishing expedition — which I’m assured they’re not going on fishing expeditions, but if it’s a fishing expedition of some sort — we have no interest in doing anything like that. Our relationship with the community is more important than that."
