Driver of suspected stolen vehicle rams into multiple police vehicles before fleeing, San Antonio police say

Authorities say officers woke the driver up before he drove away

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said the driver of a suspected stolen vehicle crashed into multiple SAPD vehicles before fleeing late Friday night.

Police said one of its officers was on routine patrol just before 11:30 p.m. when they saw a suspicious vehicle parked at a motel south of Binz Engleman Road along the southbound side of Interstate 35.

The vehicle, a black Chevrolet Tahoe, was backed up into a parking space at the motel, SAPD said in its preliminary report released on Saturday.

When the officer looked up the Chevrolet’s license plate, they found that the vehicle was reported stolen, police said.

Inside the Chevrolet was a male who was asleep in the driver’s seat. The officer then called multiple officers to assist them at the motel, the report stated.

When the officers made contact with the male, according to SAPD, he woke up, turned his vehicle on, put the Chevrolet in drive and collided with multiple SAPD vehicles.

Police said the driver also crashed into a storage shed, a support pillar and an unrelated parked car.

In all, three SAPD vehicles were damaged, authorities said.

According to SAPD’s report, the male fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.

No officers were injured in the incident. Officers said their investigation is ongoing.
