Teen arrested, charged with murder in connection with 17-year-old’s death, affidavit says

Roberto Alejandro Elizondo, 18, identified through Crime Stoppers tip

SAN ANTONIO – A teenager has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of another teen in a shooting on the East Side, according to an arrest affidavit.

Roberto Alejandro Elizondo, 18, was arrested at 3 p.m. Wednesday, online court records showed.

On Monday, Jan. 6, San Antonio police arrived at the scene and found Devin Jaden Sanchez, 17, with multiple gunshot wounds lying in the driveway of a home in the 1900 block of Schley Avenue.

Investigators gathered surveillance video from the scene, which showed a black Ford Bronco with a tire on the rear outside the house before the shooting, the affidavit said.

Two other people were injured in the shooting.

One of the victims told police that he and Elizondo were meeting to trade weapons after a deal was made through Instagram, according to the affidavit.

Both Sanchez and the second victim were driven to the house by a friend of Sanchez’s, the second victim told police.

When they arrived, the pair met with Elizondo, who was driving the Ford Bronco, and a passenger outside the vehicle to handle the transaction while Sanchez’s friend stayed in his vehicle across the street.

Sanchez, who was not directly involved with the transaction, stood on the sidewalk nearby, the affidavit said.

The second victim began to take a mounted light off the weapon they were trading when he heard the passenger say, “run that s--t.” Elizondo then pulled a gun and shot Sanchez and then shot the second victim once in the shoulder, the affidavit said.

Elizondo and the passenger got in the Bronco and fled northbound from the scene.

After officers arrived and spoke with the second victim, he gave investigators general descriptions of the pair’s appearances.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, Crime Stoppers released information about the incident, and a tip about the potential location of the Bronco was received.

Investigators later found the description of the suspect in the shooting matched that of the son of the registered owner of the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Further, investigators said the license plate data from a responding officer on the night of the shooting captured Elizondo’s vehicle traveling northbound away from the scene.

Investigators presented the second victim with a photo lineup, and he positively identified Elizondo, the affidavit said.

It is not immediately known where Elizondo’s arrest took place. His bond amount was not yet available through Bexar County’s online court records.
