🧪 Science with Sarah: Explore Weathering 🌬️⛰️

Hello parents, teachers and students! If your kiddos are learning about weathering, make sure to do this fun demonstration with them! It speeds up the weathering process by millions of years 😉

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

• A large jar with a lid you can screw on (I used a 44 oz jar)
• 2 pieces of jumbo chalk
• Rock salt

MAKE YOUR HYPOTHESIS

Answer this question: What will happen to the chalk if I shake it in a jar with rock salt?

DO THE EXPERIMENT

• STEP 1: Place one of the chalks in the large jar
• STEP 2: Fill the jar at least a third of the way full with rock salt, and close it
• STEP 3: Shake the jar for quite a while
• STEP 4: Take out the chalk and observe how much of it has broken down by comparing it to the other piece of chalk that hasn’t been placed in the jar
• STEP 5: Repeat as often as you’d like to try to break down the piece of chalk even more

HOW IT WORKS

This demonstrates how millions of years of weathering can break down mountains, boulders, and rocks.
