San Antonio city officials said the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center will remain open through Friday as a warming center. Southside ISD opened up a 24-hour warming center at Losoya Middle School Gym, at 1610 Martinez Losoya Road. Local organizations and church groups, such as Last Chance Ministries, have opened their doors to provide comfort during frigid nights. Jamie Llamas, a community organizer with Last Chance Ministries, said she immediately planned to assist the community as soon as she heard the weather forecast. The Salvation Army will be giving away blankets and cold-weather gear to those it cannot accept in the shelter due to limited space. SAN ANTONIO The Salvation Army announced on Wednesday that staff members and volunteers from San Antonio would be heading to Southeast Texas, prepared to help people affected by Hurricane Laura. According to the organization, San Antonio is one of five additional Texas sites that have prepared trucks for standby should additional support be needed. Director of the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services in Texas Alvin Migues said deployed staffers and volunteers have the experience to face the natural disaster head-on. The Incident Command Team members provide leadership in all areas of disaster response including safety, operations, logistics, finance, planning and communication, Migues said. We have established protocols specifically to address responding to disaster during the current pandemic, Migues said.

SAN ANTONIO – When the coronavirus pandemic hit South Texas, the Salvation Army of San Antonio worked quickly to ensure its shelter residents would be safe. “We’re not taking the traffic indoors, so we’ve moved our canteen truck outside,” said Brad Mayhar, spokesperson for the Salvation Army of San Antonio. “When people donate through our local Salvation Army web site, the money stays local and it helps our local programs here in San Antonio,” said Mayhar.
