A high ranking administrator with the La Vernia Independent School District was paid tens of thousands of dollars while on leave from the district, prior to his resignation going into effect, records obtained by KSAT Investigates show.

The La Vernia ISD school board heard data collected from focus groups on a 4-day school week for the district.

LA VERNIA, Texas – The La Vernia Independent School District has closed its high school campus for the rest of the week due to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases on campus. “We only moved the High School to all virtual for the remainder of the week due to an increase in both COVID-19 positive cases and necessary quarantines. When we made the decision yesterday, our High School was experiencing substantially greater percentages than our other campuses,” said Superintendent Dr. Henley Cole. There’s no indication whether remote learning will once again be offered when students return in January. Earlier this week, Seguin ISD also announced that its high school would go to virtual-only learning this week.

The UIL confirmed to KSAT it sent a notice Tuesday to district superintendents regarding updates to COVID-19 guidelines to match the recently updated TEA guidance. Greg Abbott, schools are allowed to have a maximum of 50% capacity for spectators in their stadiums as long as proper social distancing is maintained. All employees, parents, visitors and students ten years or older must wear face coverings or face shields when they attend an official UIL activity. Coaches and players not participating in games should have face coverings at all times as well, per the guidelines. The UIL is allowing 5A and 6A schools to start practice on Monday with official games scheduled to start Sept. 24.

LA VERNIA, Texas – Officials with La Vernia Independent School District have yet to hand over to KSAT 12 copies of text messages sent to and from its embattled former superintendent more than six weeks after the Texas Attorney General’s Office ordered them to do so. KSAT 12 filed a complaint late last year with the attorney general’s office, claiming the cost estimate to view the records is excessive. State law allows public entities, such as La Vernia ISD, to charge for programming and manipulation of data if someone wants to conduct an in-person inspection of electronic records.
