MRS. DOUBTFIRE THE MUSICAL AT MAJESTIC THEATRE
The stage adaptation of the 1993 comedy is in town, and an ensemble member and alternate in the title role walked through how the musical differs from the film. The bones of the story stay intact, with jokes updated from 1993 to 2026 and extra time written in to accommodate the costume changes and dance numbers. There are 32 of those changes, several performed live in front of the audience, some in under 30 seconds and choreographed down to where a foot, an arm, a wig and a mask land. The comparison offered was an F1 pit crew. Not heavy, he said, but hot, thanks to the layers.
Three performers share the Doubtfire role on tour, and each one worked with the original writers and directors to build his own voices and characterizations, so no two performances are quite alike. The heart of it, he said, is love and the reality of divorce; Robin Williams pushed to keep the film from ending with the family neatly reassembled, and the musical holds to that. His summary: you laugh till you cry and cry till you laugh again. Pre-show, the cast puts hands in and says something goofy. Last night’s was a five, six, seven, eight, here we go again. ADRIAN DAVILA LAMB BARBACOA TACOS
The pit master and cookbook author behind a South Texas barbecue family business built lamb barbacoa tacos in the studio, using meat cooked underground in maguey for eight hours at the family ranch. It went onto a blue corn tortilla, which prompted a short detour into the fact that there are hundreds of varieties of corn across the Americas, not just the yellow and white most South Texans know. Instead of the usual salsa, cilantro and onion, he layered on chimichurri plus adobo and pickled onions with jalapeño and lime, arguing that the acid and herbs cut through lamb’s depth and take away the intimidation factor people feel about it.
The dish is the star of his episode of the Netflix series, a South Texas barbecue installment that digs into why people here eat what they eat. His cookbook covers similar ground, tracing family history alongside food, religion and economics, and the questions that came with it: why flour tortillas here and corn in Mexico, why beef cheek barbacoa here and lamb there. The tacos go on special starting Saturday at the Universal City location, all day or until they run out.
