Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announces increased opportunities for kinship foster families

Over 100 regulations will be eliminated to make the foster parent process easier

AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Abbott is eliminating over 100 regulations standing in the way of relatives acting as foster parents for children in care, according to a press release.

Abbott said on Monday that he teamed up with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to increase opportunities for foster family members and streamline regulations.

“Serving as a foster parent is an invaluable way to provide a loving home for a child,” said Governor Abbott. “When we eliminate burdensome and unnecessary rules and regulations so children can stay with their families through kinship foster care, we put those children on the best path forward.”

Abbott said 195 administrative requirements have now been removed in Texas. This is after Abbott signed Senate Bill 593 into law two years ago.

This law required the Texas HHSC to audit its regulations for kinship foster members and

“Texas will continue to prioritize children in need by removing bureaucratic red tape to keep them with their families,” he said.
