How to choose a budgeting app that fits your goals

Top tips for beginners to create an effective budget

SAN ANTONIO – Everyone has their own way of managing money. Whether you prefer the traditional pen-and-paper method, spreadsheets or using budgeting apps, finding the right system is crucial.

With countless budgeting apps available, selecting one that aligns with your goals can help create a system that works effectively for you.

“The main thing to consider when choosing a budgeting app is not necessarily what the most popular app is, but the one that will most easily help you to achieve whatever your budgeting goals are,” said Elizabeth Ayoola, a personal finance expert at NerdWallet.

NerdWallet evaluated the best budgeting apps for 2025, focusing on factors such as account connectivity, expense categorization, bill tracking and ease of use, among others.

“At least the basic (thing) you should be able to do is connect your accounts. But some apps will require that you actually go into each transaction and group it according to a budgeting category,” Ayoola explained.

Many apps offer free versions, which typically include basic features and premium options that provide more advanced tools. These can include automation, payoff planning and detailed spending reports.

“Some apps with the free version, you will get maybe less, say, a month-end report of your spending and even maybe some suggestions on how you can improve it, whereas a free version may not offer that,” Ayoola added.

For beginners, Ayoola recommended three essential steps to start budgeting, whether using an app, spreadsheets or pen and paper:

  1. Audit your finances: Track your income and expenses, including credit card and loan payments.
  2. Choose a system that fits your lifestyle: Consider how much time you’re willing to spend managing your budget.
  3. Evaluate your money values: Reflect on your financial priorities and any past experiences with money that may influence your habits.

“So if you are a person who journals, really think about what your values are around money, maybe any financial trauma you have because these things can get in the way of you having an effective budget and sticking to it,” Ayoola said.

For those looking to take control of their finances, exploring budgeting apps and understanding their features is a great first step toward achieving financial stability.
