SAN ANTONIO – Precinct 1 Bexar County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores announced Tuesday she is battling colon cancer.
Clay-Flores made the announcement during Commissioners Court, stating she knew she was sick during a grueling campaign battle last year.
“I was not feeling well all year and knew something was wrong with my body,” Clay-Flores said.
Through campaigning and multiple doctor appointments, the commissioner was diagnosed with colon cancer the week early voting began last year.
Clay-Flores underwent a six-hour surgery and spent five days in the hospital to remove a bleeding tumor from her colon. She is still undergoing treatment for the cancer.
The commissioner vowed better access to public health services and says she will focus on preventative measures and early screening for colon cancer.
