SAN ANTONIO – Spring just started mid-March, but the spring semester is coming to an end for the spring 2024 KSAT interns.
Two students had a chance to work alongside the team for 12 weeks getting real-life experience working with reporters, web journalists, and producers.
Andrea Moreno and Ezekiel Ramirez are both students at Texas State University in their last semester of college and majoring in electronic media. They both have a passion for pursuing a career in the broadcasting field.
Now that their time interning with the team is over, KSAT spoke with Moreno and Ramirez to share their experiences.
During Ramirez’s time in college, he juggled work, school, interning, and even joining the school’s radio and newspaper organizations.
“If you would’ve told me last semester that I would be finishing off my college career at KSAT 12, no way would I have believed you,” Ramirez said. “I’ve watched KSAT 12 ever since I was a child, and I always dreamed of being able to work for my hometown in the future. Having the opportunity to intern here at KSAT 12 has been life-changing.”
Moreno said she got her first taste in writing for journalism when she was a student working for the college newspaper at San Antonio College. She said interning with KSAT has allowed her to find her career path.
“Even though I didn’t know what I wanted to do at first, being here allowed me to realize that it’s writing is what I want to do. I want to write for a news website,” she said. “And I’m a hands-on learning person. I need and want to do the work to teach myself how to do it, and being here at KSAT, they let me do everything hands-on.”
“I loved working with producers and learning how to write for broadcasting journalism,” she said. “But I loved writing for the web more. I love the fact that I was able to learn how to upload videos, schedule social media posts, and be able to help write for the team,” she said.
Moreno was not the only one writing web articles for the team, Ramirez was too. KSAT’s internship program allows students to learn a little bit of everything. He shared that being a reporter is what he would love to do and has started using the skills he’s learned at KSAT outside the newsroom.
“I was able to go in the field with reporters, sit in the control booth with producers, conduct stand-ups, and even write some stories for the web team,” he said. “Another thing I noticed was I was able to use the skills I learned here at KSAT and reflect them into the schoolwork I was creating for my TV News class.”
Ramirez and Moreno said they are thankful for being part of the team.
“I’m nothing but grateful to have had the opportunity to work here, and I did my best to remind myself how fortunate I am to be in the position that I’m in,” he said. “I’ve had many accomplishments in my life, but the fact that I’m going to be able to end my college career with a KSAT12 internship under my belt is what I’ll be most proud of.”
“KSAT makes you feel that you are right at home, and they don’t make you feel that you are just an intern, they treat you with the same respect and responsibility that they have among their co-workers, and that’s what I like about this team,” Moreno said.
The interns continued to say why interning with KSAT has been helpful to them.
“I recommend any student looking to pursue a broadcasting career to try to intern here at KSAT12,” Ramirez said. “I always appreciated the amount of effort KSAT12 took to make sure an intern like myself was taken care of.”
“The managers here always did their best to make sure I was doing something every day that they felt would be a beneficial experience in the career I’m choosing to pursue,” Ramirez said. “I was nervous coming into such a big news station, mostly because students are overwhelmed with such a big opportunity, but KSAT welcomed me into their home, and they did not disappoint.”
Moreno said, “If you are still trying to figure out your career path, it’s OK. It’s a scary decision to make right away. When you intern with KSAT, they will help you find your passion.”
Students who wish to intern with KSAT must have the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Major in any related communication/broadcasting field.
- Seeking course credit for their degree plan.
