STEM teacher at Brauchle Elementary is named Educator of the Month

Cheryl Perez has been at the NISD school for 3 years

SAN ANTONIO – Cheryl Perez is a STEM teacher at Brauchle Elementary and she says she has the “best problem” at school.

Her “problem” is that her students don’t want class to be over and they’re not ready to go!

“When it comes to teaching, you really need to have that connection with your kids and let them know how important they are and that you support them,” Perez said. “And, that you want what’s best for them.”

Cheryl Perez said her goal is to keep all her students, from kindergarten to fifth grade, engaged and having fun while they learn.

Brauchle Elementary School Principal April Mata-Tausch said these are just a few of the reasons why she believes Perez is being recognized as KSAT’S Educator of the Month.

“As you can see, the students were so passionate about her winning,” Mata-Tausch said. “Mrs. Perez goes extra over. She comes in on endless Saturdays. She is a great model for our STEM program here in North Side. She has brought STEM to life here at Brauchle Elementary.”

“She does a lot of fun activities, Madison Cook, a fifth grader at Brauchle Elementary said. “She’s a really great teacher. She’s been here for two years, so she’s really dedicated to her job. So yeah, she’s like a really good teacher. I think she’s the best.”

Perez has been a teacher with Northside ISD for 22 years and this is her third year at Brauchle, leading the STEM program.

“I just love the opportunity to be able to work with the children, to kind of spur them on to creative thinking,” said Perez. “And, trying something new and to know that, you know what, it’s okay if we try something out and we fail because we still learn from that failure.”
