New San Antonio store offering Black Friday deals for $7 or less gets grand opening date
A brand new store called Black Friday Deals has people lining up outside the door every morning. BALCONES HEIGHTS, Texas โ Black Friday Deals and Discount Store in San Antonio has officially set a grand opening date for this Friday, Jan. 22. The popular Black Friday Deals store in Houston announced its second location in the San Antonio area in December. According to KPRC, the items at the Houston location are mostly overstock or returned items and the new location is expected to be stocked with the same type of merchandise. The price of items changes every day, according to the day of the week.
Retail sales fell 1.1% in November, biggest drop in 7 months
U.S. retail sales fell a seasonally adjusted 1.1% in November, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. The Commerce Department on Wednesday also revised Octoberโs report, saying that retail sales fell 0.1% that month, instead of rising 0.3% as it previously reported. Economists expect retail sales to fall again this month as virus cases spike and states add more restrictions. โIt will take a miracle to keep retail sales positive in December," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at global financial group MUFG. The few bright spots were online sales, which rose 0.2%, supermarket sales, up 1.9%, and sales at home improvement stores, which were up 1.1%.

Black Friday sees record online as US shoppers stay home
Black Friday online sales hit a new record this year as pandemic-wary Americans filled virtual carts instead of real ones. Consumers spent an estimated $9 billion on U.S. retail websites on Black Friday, according to Adobe Analytics, which tracks online shopping. Field said stores may be rethinking the cost of paying employees and opening on Thanksgiving when they could easily make up for those sales online. Adobe expects Monday to be the largest online sales day in U.S. history, with estimated spending of $10.8 billion to $12.7 billion. One reason for the big numbers is that people are shopping online for things such as groceries and alcohol that they bought in person before the pandemic, Adobe said.

The Health Department said the situation constituted an โalert,โ and said that nationwide, infections had risen by over 8% last week. Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech have asked the FDA to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate. The state health department reported 5,704 new cases on Friday, putting the state at 3,476 deaths and 295,001 cases since March. ___TORONTO โ Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he expects more than half of Canadians to receive a COVID-19 vaccine by next September.
Virus keeps Black Friday crowds thin, shoppers shift online

At a popular shopping area in St. Petersburg, Florida, several storefronts were empty, and the only line was at a plasma donation center.
Black โFurdayโ deals at ACS include free, low-cost pet adoptions
SAN ANTONIO โ If all you want for Christmas is a furry, four-legged friend, nowโs the time to adopt. The Animal Care Serviceโs Black Friday, err โFurday,โ deals include free and low-cost pet adoptions from 1 p.m.-7 p.m.Ebony-colored pets will have no placement fees, ACS said in a news release. Animals adopted from ACS include spay/neuter, vaccines, de-wormer and a microchip. Walk-in availability will depend on space in the kennels, ACS says. Those visiting the shelter must wear masks, have their temperatures checked and maintain a social distance from others.

France postpones 'Black Friday' to help locked-down shops
The approach of โBlack Friday," originally scheduled for Nov. 27 in France, had brought the dilemma to a head. The director of Amazon France, Frederic Duval, told France Info radio on Friday before the meeting that the e-commerce distributor was ready to sign up to a delay. The delay applies only to Amazon France, he added. โIf we canโt open our shops for Christmas it will be very difficult for the sector,โ she said. โThere are already a lot of flower shops that suffer greatly so, today, we need help and coherence.โ

'Tis the season to get with it; retailers expect surge in online sales, shipping
SAN ANTONIO โ From virtual shopping carts to curbside pickup, Black Friday is bound to look different this year. Instead of door-busting mayhem before the pumpkin pie is even in the oven, record-busting online shopping and shipping is expected. Online shopping for the season is expected to be 25% to 35% greater than last year, according to Deloitte. Most retailers are also offering curbside pickup as shoppers try to avoid crowds and germs. Another big reason to shop early is whatโs being dubbed โshipageddon.โโWith holiday shopping on top of the widespread shift to online shopping during the pandemic, shipping companies are going to be totally overwhelmed,โ Gordon said.
Walmart to spread out deals to avoid Black Friday crowds
NEW YORK โ Walmart says it will spread out its traditional one-day Black Friday deals over three weekends in November in an effort to reduce crowds in its stores during a pandemic. The discounter, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, will kick off the deals online Nov. 4, with new deals in stores on Nov. 7. The second event will begin online Nov. 11, followed by a similar sales event in stores Nov. 14. It will wrap up its discounts online Nov. 25 with new discounts in stores Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving and the traditional Black Friday. This holiday season, many stores are starting their holiday deals in October.
Black Friday sneaks into October to compete with Amazonโs Prime Day
Amazon pushed its mega sale event called Prime Day from July to October 13-14, prompting other big retailers to scooch up their Black Friday and other sale events. โWeโre going to see a lot of tech deals, home goods and toys, as well, because Amazon is using Prime Day this year to kick off the holiday shopping season,โ said Samantha Gordon, deal-hunting guru for Consumer Reports. Target is promoting its Deal Days to coincide with Prime Day October 13-14. โIโve always said Black Friday starts November first. Pandemic pushes start of holiday shopping earlier than ever

Black Friday has long been the unofficial start to the U.S. holiday season, though retailers have been pushing holiday shopping earlier for the last decade or so. The first big holiday push will come from Amazon, which is positioning its mid-October Prime Day as a kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Even with the early start to the season, holiday sales are expected to deliver smaller gains than in recent years. Joel Bines, who runs the retail practice at AlixPartners, thinks the earlier shopping will stick even when the pandemic is over.

Coronavirus might mean less Corona beer on Cinco de Mayo
But weโre referring to Corona beer and Cinco de Mayo. Typically, the dominant choice of beer for those celebrating Cinco de Mayo is Corona. But Corona likely will be consumed way less than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic, that is unrelated in name. In February, a report in the Denver Post said Corona was taking a public relations hit due to people fearing they would get coronavirus by drinking Corona. Cinco de Mayo has surpassed St. Patrickโs Day and the Super Bowl for beer consumption on one day, with Corona virtually holding a monopoly on advertising and sales for beer on Cinco de Mayo, according to Loop Insights.
Bloomberg: Saturdayโs shopping set single-day sales record
Retail shoppers on Saturday set a new industry record, making it the single biggest day in retail history, Bloomberg reports. According to Customer Growth Partners, a retail research firm, sales reached $34.4 billion, topping Black Fridayโs $31.2 billion and Cyber Mondayโs $19.1 billion. The article said that the big retailers -- Walmart, Amazon, Costco and Target -- saw increased traffic and that job growth and an in increase in incomes have led to increased spending. Bloomberg said that despite foot traffic being down at malls, the number of people who went and actually made a purchase rose.

Mobile shopping surged on Black Friday
Investing in better apps and mobile shopping sites paid off for retailers this year, IBM said Saturday, and digital sales were up 21.5% from last year. IBM does not report total sales figures, but Adobe said Friday evening that Americans were on pace to spend more than $2.7 billion online Friday. Both companies said shoppers filled their virtual shopping carts on their smartphones and tablets more than laptop and desktop computers for the first time ever this year. "US consumers have turned into digital shopping ninjas," Adobe analyst Tamara Gaffney said. Samsung TVs, the iPad Air 2, Xbox, Lego Dimension sets, Star Wars Lego toys and Shopkin Dolls were among the most popular items on Black Friday, Adobe said.
