New surveillance video released in deadly 2018 San Marcos apartment fire

San Marcos fire officials ask public to review footage, share any information that could generate new leads

SAN MARCOS, Texas – San Marcos fire officials are asking for the public’s help after releasing newly surfaced surveillance video tied to the 2018 Iconic Village apartment fire that killed five people and injured seven others.

The San Marcos Fire Department shared the footage during a news conference Friday morning, saying investigators hope it will generate new leads in the homicide investigation.

The video was recorded July 20, 2018, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., around the time of the fire. It shows vehicles driving through the area, but officials said they cannot clearly identify the makes or models of the cars.

Investigators are asking anyone who lived in San Marcos in 2018 to review the footage and contact them if they recognize a vehicle or have information that could help.

Officials also said they are reviewing three Wi-Fi networks used in the area of North LBJ Drive and Ramsay Street, which includes BELKIN.FF, ARRIS-8CA2-5G and NIKI-NET-5G. They said the networks may help identify who was nearby at the time, not just people who lived at the Iconic Village apartment complex.

“The networks are going to help us identify who was in the area at the time,” an official said. “As we have continued to do, follow up on the investigation, reach out to people, people calling into the tip line, it’s going to help us do some narrowing of some things that we need to check out.”

Investigators have determined the fire was intentionally set.

A person was arrested in 2023 in connection with the case, but officials said a grand jury later declined to indict that person. Fire officials said their commitment to the investigation has not changed and that they are still working to find the person or people responsible.

A $50,000 reward remains available for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Iconic Village fire tip line at 512-393-7388. Officials said the line is not staffed 24/7, but anyone who leaves a message will receive a call back.
