Firefighters respond after fire breaks out at home just north of downtown

Fire was called in around 6:15 a.m. in 800 block of West Poplar Street

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters responded to a fire at a home just north of downtown early Wednesday morning.

The fire was called in around 6:15 a.m. at a home in the 800 block of West Poplar Street, not far from North Flores Street and Interstate 10.

Firefighters said they arrived to find flames and smoke showing from the two-story home and the windows and doors both boarded up. They however got a quick knock down of the fire.

Fire officials said they have had reports of vagrants going in and out of the house, but no one was inside when they searched it. The first unit that arrived did see someone coming out of an unattached garage, but they have since left the area. Authorities say they don’t necessarily believe that person is a suspect, but it just reaffirms that some people have been on the property.

A neighbor told KSAT 12 that they’ve made numerous reports about people getting into the house by climbing up the drain pipe to the second floor and going in through a window. The home is one of the oldest on the block and hasn’t been lived in for years, the neighbor said.

Firefighters say the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no reports of any injuries.

According to the San Antonio Fire Department website, as many as 18 units answered the call.
