SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio-based artists can apply for up to $5,000 in grants to create new, original works of art.

On Friday, the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture opened the intent to apply window for artists who want to be considered for the grant.

Applicants must submit an intent to apply by 5 p.m. on April 14 to gain access to the full grant application, which will be open from April 3-28.

Artists who submit an Intent to Apply and who meet the program’s eligibility criteria will then have access to the full application.

“To date, more than 100 visual artists, performers, filmmakers, musicians, poets and multi-disciplinary artists have benefited from grants through this program,” said Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones.

Grant applications are evaluated by a panel of experts in each artistic discipline with potential additional points to artists who self-describe as a person of racial and/or ethnic color, LGBTQIA+, a woman, a veteran, and/or living or operating their studio in a census tract that is historically disadvantaged as shown on the City of San Antonio’s Equity Atlas, according to a press release.

Requirements for grants include the production of new, original and high-quality art to be presented in the city. Artists of all disciplines, including literary arts, media arts, multi-disciplinary, performing arts and visual arts are encouraged to apply.

“Not only have these artists created incredible art that is accessible to all, but a natural synergy has been developed between artists and nonprofits, non-traditional art spaces and other artists,” said Jones.

Artist and Grantee Raul Rene Gonzalez said receiving an Individual Artist Grant allowed him to start a new series of mixed-media paintings and drawings.

“It is a great feeling to know that the City of San Antonio continually supports artists and their work,” said Gonzalez. “Knowing that my body of work has both financial and peer support means a lot.”
