1 person killed in fiery big rig crash on Loop 410 ramp to I-35

Driver rescued but passenger remained in cab

SAN ANTONIO – One person was killed in a fiery big rig crash on Thursday afternoon on the ramp from southbound Loop 410 to southbound Interstate 35.

A preliminary report from San Antonio police said the driver of the 18-wheeler lost control of the rig at 12:30 p.m. as he was attempting to merge onto I-35.

The big rig, which was hauling spools of metal cable, struck the concrete wall and rolled up onto the wall. It rode the wall for about 350 feet and landed on its passenger side. It quickly became engulfed in flames.

Police said the fire caused the cab of the truck to collapse, and the truck rolled onto the top of its cab.

Two SAPD sergeants witnessed the crash and, along with several witnesses, helped the driver get out and tried to extinguish the flames. He suffered minor injuries.

They were not able to get the passenger out of the rig and that person died at the scene.

The passenger has not been identified by police.

No criminal charges are expected to be filed.
