CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Update:
An officer who was shot and hospitalized is expected to recover and three people are in custody, according to Corpus Christi police.
The incident happened at 3:07 p.m., Saturday when police said they were called to assist the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office in following a stolen vehicle heading eastbound on Highway358.
The suspects’ vehicle then exited at Rodd Field, took the turnaround and headed westbound on South Padre Island Drive. Eventually, the suspect crashed the vehicle in the 6100 block of South Padre Island Drive and three people fled on foot, according to police.
During the on-foot pursuit, one of the suspects pulled a gun and shot an officer, police said. The officer then returned fire and the suspect was also hit, according to CCPD.
Another suspect, a 19-year-old, was barricading himself inside of an area business, but police were able to take him into custody. Another suspect, a 16-year-old, was also arrested.
The vehicle the suspects were traveling in was confirmed stolen and police said they recovered at least one handgun.
Both the officer and the suspect are being treated at area hospitals.
“The officer did sustain serious injuries, but is expected to recover,” CCPD said in a release.
The officers who were involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, as part of the department’s policy. The investigation continues.
