New Braunfels siblings honored for outstanding service projects

The projects help children in hospitals and breast cancer patients

NEW BRAUNFELS – Siblings in New Braunfels are being recognized by the Boy Scouts of America for their outstanding service projects.

“I feel proud that I did something to give back to the community,” said Elizabeth Bowers, a winner of the Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award.

Elizabeth Bowers and her brother, Harry, created two unique projects that help children in hospitals and breast cancer patients.

“My project was hand warmers for cancer patients, more specifically pediatric cancer patients to help with neuropathy after chemo. It was in memory of Waylon Malone,” Harry said.

Harry dedicated his project “Mighty Mitts” in memory of 9-year-old Waylon, who lost his battle with cancer in 2017.

“I met him first in my mom’s kindergarten class. Fell in love with playing Pokemon cards with him and bonded over that,” Harry said.

He has made over 400 mitts that have benefited patients in children’s hospitals.

“I feel proud that I did something to give back to the community,” said Elizabeth Bowers,a winner of the Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award.

“I decided to do my project because I found out one of my aunts, great aunts, was diagnosed with breast cancer and I know it impacts one in eight people,” she said. “So I wanted to do something to give back to that because I had a passion for that.”

Elizabeth has made more than 200 pillows that have benefited two nonprofits.

“It’s a helping heart with a heating pad and cooling pad inside of it,” Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth has a message for others wanting to do a project.

“Try to strive for a passion that you enjoy and follow through on it,” she said.
