Driver abandoned crash after car hit mailbox, caught fire on SE Side

Crash happened just before 5 a.m. in 4700 block of Pecan Grove

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are searching for a driver following a vehicle crash on the city’s Southeast Side early Thursday morning.

The crash happened just before 5 a.m. in the 4700 block of Pecan Grove Drive, not far from East Southcross.

According to police, a caller heard a crash and then saw a car on fire. Officers arrived and found the car smashed up, with bricks all over the street, police said.

Investigators say it looks like the driver took out at least one brick mailbox and then the car caught fire. The driver was not at the scene.

Police said they had reports of someone walking away, but they did not find the driver. The EAGLE helicopter even few over the crash site, but to no avail.

At this time, it is unclear what, if any, charges will be filed against the driver once that person is found.

The investigation is ongoing, police say.
