San Antonio police called to break up street race involving dozens of cars

Citations issued to some participants

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police say they issued several citations after breaking up a street race which they say involved dozens of cars at a busy Southeast Side intersection.

Officers responded to the corner of East Southcross and South WW White Road shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, acting on a tip from the San Antonio Fire Department.

They say they had a report about street racing there with as many as 100 cars blocking off the intersection.

As police arrived, the crowd broke up and people scrambled.

They say they found only one car still blocking the road.

Police had that vehicle and one other towed away and impounded.

Officers also issued citations to people who they found at the scene but did not make any arrests.

There were no injuries reported in this incident.

However, in the past, police have said street racing is an ongoing problem in the city which has led to injuries and deaths.

Under a city ordinance passed last September, even just being a spectator at a street race carries a $500 fine.
