Driver in custody, passenger killed following vehicle crash on South Side, police say

One person is dead and another is in custody following a vehicle crash on the city’s South Side late Tuesday night.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. in the 2900 block of Shane Road, not far from Loop 410 and Southton Road.

According to police, a man and woman were traveling in a Chevrolet southbound on Villamin Road toward Shane Road at a high rate of speed when the driver failed to handle a curve, drove into a wooded area and struck a tree.

Police said the pair became pinned inside their vehicle and had to be cut out by firefighters.

The 47-year-old driver was rescued quickly by firefighters, but the 19-year-old passenger took more time to get out. The passenger was taken by EMS to Brooke Army Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.

The driver was found to be intoxicated and was booked on a charge of intoxication assault, police said. The man’s name has not been released.
