20,000+ rainbow trout to be stocked along sections of Guadalupe River for anglers looking to get a bite

Rainbow trout will be stocked every week through end of January

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will stock nearly 20,500 rainbow trout in the Canyon Tailrace portion of the Guadalupe River over the course of three months starting Dec. 3.

Trout will be stocked just below the dam at Guadalupe Park, Whitewater Camp, 4th River Road Crossing, 3rd River Road Crossing and Camp Huaco Springs in New Braunfels, according to TPWD.

The tentative dates for rainbow trout stocking along the tailrace are Dec. 3, 10, 17, 22 and 30, as well as Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 27.

Anglers looking to fish along the tailrace will be able to access Camp Huaco for free from Dec. 7 through March 7.

Rainbow trout are stocked as part of the Neighborhood Fishin’ program which encourages families to spend time together outdoors.

“TPWD stocks catchable-sized fish during winter months to create angling opportunities throughout Texas,” said TPWD’s rainbow trout Program Director Carl Kittel.

A total of 352,563 rainbow trout are expected to be stocked throughout Texas from Nov. 24 through March 6, 2022.

That’s nearly 18,500 more fish than were stocked during the rainbow trout stocking season for 2020-2021.

“Our winter rainbow trout program has been a favorite with anglers for over forty years,” said Kittel.

Kids aged 16 and younger can fish for free but anyone over 17 must have a valid fishing license. Licenses and endorsements are not required when fishing in a Texas state park, but reserving a day pass in advance is highly recommended.

Day passes can be reserved online through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website or over the phone by calling (512) 389-8900.
